Wer mir auf Instagram (@phoenomenal) folgt hat es bereits mitkommen, denn ich war Anfang November für eine Woche im Oman. Ich habe in der zehnten Klasse im Rahmen eines Schüleraustausches zehn Tage in einer Gastfamilie verbracht und währenddessen das Land und seine Leute lieben gelernt. Jetzt, drei Jahre später, habe ich meine Gastfamilie wieder einmal besucht und meine Mama auch gleich eingepackt. Sie hat sich genauso in das Land verliebt wie ich.

Das Sultanat Oman, so der offizielle Name, ist ein noch sehr unbekanntes und für jeden der im Hotel wohnt ein zugegeben auch ziemlich teures Reiseziel. Um mal etwas Werbung für dieses wunderbare Land zu machen, erzähle ich euch erstmal noch etwas mehr Allgemeines. Auf der Karte liegt das Sultanat Oman am südöstlichen Ende der arabischen Halbinsel und wird an 2 Seiten von Wasser begrenzt, dem Golf von Oman und der arabischen See. Angrenzende Länder sind der Jemen, Saudi-Arabien und die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate. Mit etwas unter 3,5 Millionen Einwohnern ist es ebenfalls ein sehr dünn besiedeltes Land.

I’ve already been there as a part of a exchange program in the 10th grade and felt in love with the country and its natives. Now, already 3 years later, I was visiting my host family together with my mom. She felt in love like I did last time.

The Sultanate of Oman, so the official name, is for us Europeans a relatively unknown yet pretty expensive travel destination. I want to give you some further general information about this beautiful country: On the map the country is located on the south-east end of the Arabian peninsula and has two water borders. On one side you have the Gulf of Oman, which is flowing into the Arabian sea and also demonstrates the other water border. Next door neighbours to the Sultanate are Yemen, Saudi-Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Less than 3.5 million inhibitants are living in this country.

Im Gegensatz zur deutschen Kanzlerin regiert im Oman ein Sultan, derzeit Sultan Qabus ibn Said, als absoluter Monarch. Sultan Quabus regiert seit mehr als 45 Jahren das Land und wird vom Volk gemocht und respektiert. Eine Eigenschaft die er mit Angie gemeinsam hat. Obwohl es keine Demokratie in unserem Sinne ist, wirkte das Land auf mich sehr modern. Die wahnsinnig großen Supermärkte die Sie dort Hypermarkets nennen und die Tatsache das dort Strecken über 500m mit dem Auto zurückgelegt werden, erinnerten sehr an Amerika. Als überzeugte Fahrradfahrer und Fußgänger, war das für meine Mama und mich doch wieder einmal eine sehr starke Umstellung.

Obwohl das Land sich dem 21. Jahrhundert angepasst hat, hat es seinen Charme und seine charakteristische Kultur nicht verloren. In diesem Land treffen Gegensätze so wunderbar aufeinander, doch dazu mehr in einem weiteren Post. Hier könnt Ihr ein paar Einrücke aus Nizwa Fort sehen, einem Schloss in Nizwa, der alten Hauptstadt des Landes.

Ein Palast des Sultans ist im Zentrum von Muskat. Für uns Europäer mag er vielleicht etwas zu bunt sein und wir würden Ihn hier so nicht bauen. Für die Architektur des Landes ist es aber ein Kronjuwel und passt perfekt dorthin.

Einer meiner Lieblingsorte in der Hauptstadt Muscat ist der Muttrah Souk. Ein riesengroßer Markt wo man Gewürze, Schmuck, Deko, Tücher, … kaufen kann. Ich liebe es mich hier durch die Stände zu stöbern und das Treiben der Leute zu beobachten. Für Touristen sind die Preise oft höher angesetzt als für die Einheimischen, deshalb empfehle ich es zu handeln und wer die Möglichkeit hat mit Einwohnern, welche für einen Handeln können, den Markt zu besuchen, sollte diese Möglichkeit unbedingt nutzen.

// One of my places to be in Muscat is Muttrah Souk. A huge market where you get spices, jewelery, decorations, scarfs, etc. I just love to stroll through the small valleys and watch the people bargaining. For tourists they often increase the prices, so it’s good to bargain a lot. If you go there with a native who does this for you, it’s even better.
